Light blinks in a pattern instead of staying on

The motor runs but the door doesn’t move

It only works some of the time, or needs several attempts

Grinding, rattling, or squealing when it runs

Repair or Replace?

Repair

A dead circuit board, a stripped gear, or a sensor issue on a unit that’s otherwise in good condition is almost always cheaper to repair than a full replacement.

Replace

Once the motor itself has failed, the unit is more than 10–15 years old, or repair costs start approaching the price of a new one, replacement is the better call.

We’ll always tell you honestly which side of that line your opener falls on — it’s rarely worth replacing a unit that just needs one part.

Common Causes We Fix

The worn drive gear is the most common wear part in belt and chain-drive openers; it is usually plastic and easily strips over time.

Dirty or misaligned safety sensors near the floor on both sides of the door will stop it closing if they are blocked, dirty or knocked out of line.

Motor burnout usually appears on older units that are already nearing the end of their normal service life.

Circuit board failure controls the entire unit, so when the board dies the whole opener stops working completely.

Remote or keypad programming issues are often just a quick five-minute fix and almost never mean you need a brand-new opener.

The drive belt or chain can stretch or snap with age, leaving the motor running while the door stays completely still.

⚠ Required by law

Every automatic opener sold in Australia is required to have safety reversal sensors that stop the door if something's in the way.

They’re the most common cause of “door won’t close” calls, usually because they’re dirty, misaligned, or something is briefly breaking the beam. They’re not something to disable or bypass — if yours has stopped working, it needs fixing, not ignoring.

New Installations & Smart Openers

We supply and fit openers from all major brands used in Australia — B&D, Merlin, ATA and Chamberlain — matched to your door’s size and weight. Most new installs can also be fitted with Wi-Fi connectivity, so you can open the door, check it’s closed, and get alerts from your phone. We’ll set up remotes, keypads and app access as part of the install.

Do You Need an Electrician?

Usually, no. If your garage already has a suitable power point, plugging an opener motor into it isn’t classed as electrical work — our technicians handle that as part of the install. A licensed electrician only needs to get involved if a new power point has to be added, an existing one relocated, or wiring concealed inside a wall. If your installation needs that extra step, we’ll coordinate it as part of the job rather than leaving you to arrange it separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my door reverse before it closes?

Almost always the safety sensors either dirty, out of alignment, or something’s briefly breaking the beam. It can also mean the close-force setting needs adjusting.

Yes, every opener has a manual release (usually a red cord) precisely for this. It doesn’t tell you what’s wrong with the opener itself, just that the door isn’t stuck.

The mechanical mounting is possible for a confident DIYer, but incorrect installation affects the safety sensors and force settings  the exact things that prevent injury. We’d recommend professional installation, particularly for the safety calibration

Yes — most current models from major brands support app control, and we can set this up as part of a new installation.
